Wonderful to see the UK’s biggest show on photography persevere through having to be cancelled earlier this year due to the pandemic and return in this COVID 19 friendly, virtual form.
The Photography Show will be on this coming Sunday and Monday, September 20th and 21st. So, get some of your favourite snacks and drinks in stock, plump up the cushions on your favourite chair, fire up your computer or smart device and settle in to all things photographic.

I’m delighted to be presenting on one of the Main Stages this year. My presentation will be on “Shooting an international campaign“, on the Connect stage. I was thrilled to have been commissioned by Panasonic Lumix Japan to shoot the international launch campaign for the yet unannounced Lumix S Pro 24-70mm f2.8 lens. During my talk I’ll be sharing various aspects of how I prepared for and worked on the campaign, sharing my images as well as a behind the scenes video of me shooting one aspect of the project. I’m most thankful that Lumix UK have supported my presentations and will be hosting a live Q&A shortly afterwards.

I’ll also be one of the photographers from the Eyewitness collective who will be part of a panel talk about the importance of having prints and why we’ve joined together as a global collective of concerned photographers, sharing our thoughts about the physical manifestation of the image and why we feel it’s crucial for us as individuals, as a society and also us as photographers; professional and enthusiast.
Behind The Scenes With Tom Stoddart; Shooting A Campaign For The International Committee of the Red Cross And Red Crescent (ICRC)
A fascinating behind the scenes shoot showing multi award winning photojournalist Tom Stoddart shooting the “Healthcare In Danger” campaign for the ICRC, using a Leica S2 medium format digital camera. I really like this campaign as the studio shots are like I have never seen before; they have a gritty realism to them which immediately puts the viewer within the conflict zone feel and communicates the message.

Picture the scene; your client has spent tens if not hundreds of thousands of pounds on the launch of their latest product or service. They have hired your PR firm to generate interest and spread the word. Months if not years of R&D, planning and hard work have gone into this moment when the product is to be revealed to the public. It’s a make or break moment. You yourself have spent weeks or even months planning, writing press releases, talking of strategies and when it comes to one of the most crucial aspects, the actual reveal to the public, you choose your photographer without much thought and skimp on budget, trying to cut corners for what is a tiny amount in the grand scheme of the project. The result? All this effort and expense goes to waste; the papers don’t give your client coverage, the product fails and you and your company not only look bad, but risk losing that account.

I can be of help. I’ve been a press photographer also covering PR and commercial photography since 1989. I’ve weathered two recessions – not through dropping prices or doing silly promotions, but by producing great, award winning photography – consistently. On several occasions my PR photography has made it into the papers’ “Pictures of the Week” and been given the space good photography deserves. I can be involved at the early planning stage by being a consultant (essential and often overlooked), advising on what will make a strong photographic campaign and what the picture editors will go for, all the way through to the actual photography and getting the pictures out there to the papers.
