A beautifully intimate film on the legendary Magnum photojournalist Philip Jones Griffiths, featuring a lot of his amazing work and also very interesting interviews with his Magnum Photos colleagues.
This is the most important project I did during 2012; a look at an amazing hospital in Stanmore, Middlesex called the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH). The original film was first commissioned by the hospital’s charity to help raise funds. After filming I spent several days at the RNOH with the aim of just shooting images. Leica M9s to hand, I was fortunate to see some wonderful moments and combined with a recent visit to the children’s ward by the hospital’s Patron, HRH Princess Eugenie in December, I decided to make a completely new edit of the film, incorporating the photographs.

Steve McCurry is definitely one of my favourite photojournalists and an absolute master of his art. I was a little surprised to hear he shot the Pirelli Calendar for 2013, but watching this behind the scenes video makes the whole thing make sense! He shot it very much in his way and I love the concept of taking it away from the traditional nudes and making more about these amazing women featured. The style of images as one would expect are different too. Beautifully posed models, lit in some cases by LED lights, but juxtaposed against real surroundings, with elements of street photography and teh natural world around them.

Fractured Lives is a photographic and multimedia project illustrating the struggles faced by Rwandan citizens rebuilding their lives after the 1994 genocide. The exhibition is at the SW1 Gallery, Cardinal Place (Roof Garden) off Victoria Street in London, and runs until October 12th (check opening times of the gallery before making a trip).

The project was shot by Carol Allen Storey for International Alert and documents the lives of survivors, ex-combatants and ex-prisoners as they build their communities and reconcile.

I’m proud to say that I have been involved in all the image processing for the project, as well as creating a multimedia piece using these powerful photographs, stories told by the subjects, local music and a voice over. You can view this film below.

I had the pleasure of attending a screening of “Deadline Every Second” by Ken Kobré at the Frontline Club a week ago. It’s a brilliantly shot short film covering 12 photojournalists from AP as they cover various assignments around the world, with great photographer interviews as well as superb footage of them actually on the job. Just to make things complete, we’re also treated to the actual images taken by the photographers.

I can’t recommend this film highly enough to anyone interested in journalism or world affairs, but also to photojournalists and students of it. Definitely try and see it. It’s being screened by various US TV stations and is also available from Amazon.
