NOMINEES & HONOREES: 5TH ANNUAL TASTE AWARDS

Very pleased to share that my short film on the Electric Coffee Company has been nominated in the 5th Annual Taste Awards in the “Best Mini Film or Documentary” section.

As the film is nominated in the Viewers Choice category, voting for the film is open to the public until December 18, 2013. If you like my short film, I would really appreciate if you would take a minute or two and vote for it; thank you.

The Last Animals

The Slaughter Of Elephants and Rhinos


Over the past two years, the slaughter of African elephants and rhinoceros has skyrocketed to supply international markets with their tusks and horns. Ivory has been dubbed the white gold of jihad and rhino horn now has a higher market value than cocaine and gold. With the expansion of radical Islamist and independent militias in Africa, along with criminal syndicates, the daring groups carrying out these bloody “harvests” are killing these animals at unprecedented rates.

Top Four For Short Movie

Professional Photographer Of The Year 2013

I am absolutely thrilled to share that one of my short films, Solitude, has made it in to the top four of the shortlist for the Short Movie section of the Professional Photographer of the Year 2013 competition.

My short film joins my news image and street photograph, who are also in the final shortlist of 20. I am absolutely honoured to have three of my works in the finals! Please keep your fingers crossed!

I’m pleased to say I made the shortlist and was commended in the Nikon Videographer of the Year category for my short documentary film on the Electric Coffee Company in Ealing, west London.

There will be an exhibition of the photographs (sadly not including the short films) at the Museum of London, from today (November 6th) to the 16th of March 2014. For more details please visit their website.

On a technical note, the video was shot using a Leica M (Type 240) and Leica lenses. For more details on the tools used, please see my earlier post on this.

Finalist In The UK Picture Editors’ Guild Awards

Nikon Videographer of the Year Finalist, 2013

Thrilled to share that I’m a finalist in the UK Picture Editors’ Guild  Videographer Of The Year category. The film was a feature on a privately owned speciality cafe in Ealing called the Electric Coffee Company. The awards evening is on November 4th, so please keep your fingers crossed!

The film was my first ever using the new Leica M (Type 240) and also the first time using the very useful Manfrotto 561BHDV Fluid Monopod with Head.

The Power Of Photography

The Napalm Girl By Nick Ut

In my opinion, AP photographer Nick Ut‘s Pulitzer Prize winning photograph from the Vietnam War, commonly known as the “Napalm Girl” is the most iconic and most powerful photograph ever taken.

In this June 8, 1972 file photo, crying children, including 9-year-old Kim Phuc, center, run down Route 1 near Trang Bang, Vietnam after an aerial napalm attack on suspected Viet Cong hiding places as South Vietnamese forces from the 25th Division walk behind them. A South Vietnamese plane accidentally dropped its flaming napalm on South Vietnamese troops and civilians. From left, the children are Phan Thanh Tam, younger brother of Kim Phuc, who lost an eye, Phan Thanh Phouc, youngest brother of Kim Phuc, Kim Phuc, and Kim's cousins Ho Van Bon, and Ho Thi Ting. Here’s a superb ABC7 Special about the image, the stories and people involved. It’s well worth watching. Powerful, moving, interesting.


Fascinatingly, this TV documentary also clearly shows the power of photography compared to TV footage. Nick Ut’s photograph has such power and depth, compared to the TV footage which whilst strong, has no where near the strength of the still image. Anyone who doesn’t understand the power of a photograph needs to be shown this documentary.
