I’m delighted to share this good news! Whilst on assignment on London’s South Bank I came across this gorgeous old Ford pickup truck and couldn’t resist photographing it; very happy that I did! The rusty pipes and concrete really added to the feel of the image as did the single overhead light. The image was shot on my Leica M9 and Leica 35mm Summilux ASPH (FLE).

Finalist In The Picture Editors Guild Awards

The UK Picture Editors’ Guild Awards 2012; Photo Essay category

Delighted to share some good news. A reportage I shot at the amazing Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, to highlight the conditions the hospital has to work in and help raise awareness and hopefully funds, has been selected by the UK Picture Editors Guild as a finalist in this year’s competition.

The 20 images have been selected as a finalist in the Photo Essay category of the awards and the winners will be announced tonight at the awards dinner this evening. The photo essay is one of six selected essays submitted by press photographers from around the country, covering national and international stories. Fingers crossed!

The Taylor Wessing Prize 2012

The Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize 2012

It’s perhaps one of the most interesting awards to enter; prestigious to win as the works are hung at the National Portrait Gallery, yet one of the most difficult & expensive to enter, as prints are required, complete with protective sleeves. As large print sizes are needed (your entry will be the print that is hung if you win), having anything smaller than A2 in size means your work may simply not be noticed by the judges, compared to huge prints entered by others which may dwarf smaller prints. In this day and age of conservation, it can be quite a wasteful effort putting together six A1 (or bigger) images purely for judging.

Past years have brought surprising results in images chosen and sometimes shocking winners. It is though a great competition and generally always shows off some great work.

Alas it is a competition that I failed to get selected for, and after being requested by friends to do so, here I share my six entries into this year’s Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize 2012 .

Both shots were part of my continuing series of street photography taken around London. I shot both images with my Leica M9, using a 50mm Summicron for the winning image and a 50mm Noctilux ASPH for the nominated shot. Both photographs were processed using Apple’s Aperture 3 and Nik Software’s Silver Efex Pro 2.

Surprisingly, I am one of only four winners from the UK and only two of us won first prize in our respective categories. To see all the winning images, click the logo below:
