A Multimedia Piece On LA; Its People, Its Places

On a recent trip to Hollywood to attend the Taste Awards ceremony at the Egyptian Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard as a finalist for my film on the Electric Coffee Company, I decided to shoot a project on Los Angeles.

My initial thought was to shoot a photo series of daily life, a photo series on TV Host Andrea Feczko and separately, a video interview with the legendary AP photographer, Nick Ut. As my time in LA continued, I shot a wider set of imagery and short video interview with LA street artist Plastic Jesus.

For the project, I took an Olympus OM-D E-M1 and Olympus M.Zuiko lenses; the 12-40mm f2.8PRO, 25mm f1.8 (see my review of this superb lens) and 45mm f1.8. I also took along a Roland R26 audio recorder and the Rode Lavalier and VideoMic Pro microphones. Lastly, possibly the most used accessory, a Lastolite reflector which didn’t stop getting used for the beach and pool shots with Andrea. I don’t think in my lifetime I’ve used a reflector as much as I did over those two days!

When looking at the material as a whole, it became apparent that it all would make an immersive multimedia piece, mixing photography (and time lapse photography) with video, some audio and the right music. After I’d done my photo editing and processing in Aperture, I fired up FCP X and started to look at the material as one unified project. 64 hours of editing later, I had my “LA Diary”.

The interviews with Nick Ut and Plastic Jesus are short tasters as I will be editing more in-depth versions of these in due course. For the LA Diary, it worked better to have shorter, sharper video segments to fit in with the flow of the entire piece. The flow was helped along tremendously wight he correct music and I spent a while listening to various pieces. I’ve mixed, edited and cut quite a few of the tracks, bringing in audio on it’s own or with video and getting the delicate balance just right was tremendously helped along by using the astonishing Event Opal audio monitors.

During the project I had a lot of help from various people, so a huge thanks goes out to: Nick Ut, Associated Press, Andrea Feczko, Rachel Rudwall, Plastic Jesus, Armen Khanlian, Yvette K. My First Leica M (Type 240) Video

Short Film On The Electric Coffee Company

Pleased to share my first short film shot entirely on the new Leica M (Type 240) camera. For the project at the Electric Coffee Company, I used the Leica 28mm Summicron ASPH, 35mm Summilux ASPH FLE and 50mm Noctilux ASPH, with some of the closeup shots being done with the aid of a Leica OUFRO macro adapter. Interview audio was done on a Roland R26 and Rode lavalier microphone. The reportage shots were all done using a Manfrotto 561BHDV video monopod and the interview was shot on a Gitzo video tripod. I also used a Lee RF75 filter holder and Lee ND filters for some shots.

The editing was done on Apple’s FCP X with several shots being graded in Color by colourist Neil Patience. The final film then had it’s final grading done using Film Convert.

Highly Commended: Multimedia Section

The Press Photographers’ Year 2013

The results of The Press Photographer’s Year 2013 were announced on 1st July, showcasing the very best press photography from 2011 & 2012 taken for and used by the UK news media.

Absolutely delighted and honoured to have had my work chosen by the judges of PPY 2013 (Press Photographers’ Year). I was fortunate to receive “Highly Commended” in the Multimedia section, for a project I shot on the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH) which was produced and edited by the very talented Neil Patience at TAP TV.

The video was shot over several months using Canon 5D MkII cameras and lenses, and edited by Neil Patience using FCP 7. For the multimedia piece, further photographs were taken using Leica M9 cameras and lenses, and the piece was re-edited by me using FCP X. All audio was recorded using Rode microphones; the VideoMic, VideoMic Pro and NTG-3. The film had it’s premiere screening at St James’s Palace.

“Now in its seventh year, the competition’s aim is to demonstrate that even in an age of rolling television news, internet and satellite communication, the traditional still image burns the keenest, fastest impression on the public conscience and is the most effective way to show the world the world as it really is.”

I’m also delighted that one of my photographs (“Love Your Job”) was also selected for the PPY exhibition at the National Theatre in London. It will be featured in “Features” section, joining the 150 images chosen from the just over 12,500 submitted by 390 photographers, from over 20 countries. All the winning images can be viewed on this slide show and details of the winners are also on this list. A full Press Release is also available.

Huge congratulations to all the winners; this year’s winning imagery is spectacular and the exhibition is definitely one not to miss; National Theatre, South Bank, London, from July 6th to August 31st, 2013.

Gunter Sachs Collection at Sotheby’s

An Exclusive Behind The Scenes Look


Behind the scenes as Sotheby’s prepares the Gunter Sachs Collection ahead of the sale on May 22nd and 23rd, 2012. Sotheby’s will be offering close to 300 works of art from the prestigious single owner collection. The sale is estimated to realise £20 million.

Almost 7200 pictures were used in this timelapse. The majority were shot on a pair of Canon 5D MkII cameras specifically set up for shooting this timelapse (with a 16-35mm f2.8L II and 24-105mm f4L), one being triggered by a Pocket Wizard Multimax and the other by the highly configurable IO Shutter running on an iPad 3. A GoPro HD Hero was used for the overhead view timelapse. Reportage images were shot on a Leica M9 and M9-P (using a 50mm Noctilux ASPH, 35mm Summilux ASPH and 28mm Summicron ASPH). The images were all processed in Apple’s Aperture and the video created using Apple’s FCP X.

MediaStorm

I had the pleasure of attending a workshop by MediaStorm‘s executive producer, Brian Storm, at the Frontline Club in London. It was an amazingly inspiring day, lots of information and an array of really powerful and moving work. I’ll be posting projects put together by the talented crew at MediaStorm, and will start by sharing these two astonishing projects. Astonishingly, both of these projects were created during MediaStorm’s Advanced Storytelling Workshops! Such an amazing fusion of photography, video and audio and storytelling as it should be done.
