The power of the photograph never ceases to amaze me. A good friend, the talented Hakob Berberyan (also known as Hakber), a photojournalist and sports photographer based in Armenia, has over the last two days found some pictures he took of me in Karabakh, back in 1994.

Receiving these images out of the blue, has taken me on a journey through time. A reflection on the sadness of war, meeting the most amazing people manning the trenches in Martakert, the amazing spirit of ordinary people in villages thrown into a conflict zone, the value of friendship and camaraderie. The humbling feeling of a people so thankful that someone had come to photograph and thus document what they were going through.

A cocktail of feelings and thoughts, and a montage of remembered images, some photographed and some seen, a remembrance of youth and wonder, all brought about by seeing a photograph. Amazing.

Marks Of Excellence

I Shot It Competition

Pleased to share that two of my images have been awarded the “Mark of Excellence” in the I Shot It Premium Photo Competition.

A commuter, one of many walking wounded, leaves the Edgware Road Underground Station, still clutching his morning paper. A suicide bomber blew himself up on a tube train at the station, killing seven passengers. This was one of four terrorist attacks on the transport system, resulting in 52 innocent deaths. As 2015 marks the 10th anniversary of the London Bombings, I entered the image again to remind us all of the horrendous events of that black day and in memory of all who perished and in celebration of all the bravery shown by the survivors and those in the emergency services who went to their aid.

This second image is one of my favourite images; one I found in a church in northern Armenia on the day of the 10th anniversary of the earthquake. As I turned a corner and walked into this annexed room, the light just grabbed me. Seconds later this lady walked in and started to pray. My two thoughts were of how fortunate I was to witness this powerful scene and the second was I hope I expose correctly for the slide film I’m shooting.

Technical Information

The London Bombings image was shot on a Canon 1D Mk II and Canon 300mm f2.8L IS. The Armenian image was shot on a Leica M6 and if I remember correctly, a Leica 21mm Elmarit, using Kodak Ektachrome slide film.

Montblanc Pens Image Reaches Finals

Photograph Chosen As Part Of 20 Finalists in MyRankart Competition

Pleased to share that at the end of January this image was judged through the top 50 and then the top 20 of the My Rank Art competition, which had a theme of Everyday Objects. Alas it didn’t go on to win, but the top 20 isn’t too shabby!

The photograph was shot on a Leica M (Type 240) and a vintage, 1959 Leitz 50mm Summilux.

It’s always nice to be featured in magazines and this week’s Amateur Photographer magazine (June 19, 2014) has a double page spread about my “Love Your Job” photograph. Fittingly, as the issue is a tribute to Leica’s 100th anniversary, the image was made on my Leica M9.

Shot using a Nikkor 8mm Fisheye lens on a Leica M (Type 240), using a Novoflex Nikon to Leica M adapter.

One of the joys of mirrorless cameras is the ability to mount practically every lens made by every manufacturer, using the appropriate adapter. The Leica M rangefinder, being the mother of all mirrorless cameras (going back to 1954), made the perfect camera to try out my old, vintage Nikkor 8mm f8 fisheye lens. Especially as the camera has a full frame sensor so can display the circular fisheye perfectly. With the Leica M (Type 240)’s Live View, the camera was ideal.

My favourite lens adapters are made by Novoflex (available in the UK from Speed Graphic). With a lot of research and help from the wise folks at the Leica Users Forum, we deduced that the Nikkor would fit (it has a very deep rear element. When used on an SLR, the mirror has to be locked up before the lens is mounted).

***DISCLAIMER – you need to realise that mounting any non standard lens to your camera has it’s own risks. Do your research carefully as you will have to take full responsibility if anything goes wrong! I am not liable for any mistakes, accidents or damage and do not encourage you to try this!***

These are early days and I’m going to explore using this circular fisheye, but I wanted to share the journey so far. The only proper picture I’ve made so far is the washing machine drum, but there will be more to come, so keep an eye on my Flickr page!
