Symbols Of Lost Homes: This is the key to the front door of a home in Jaffa, belonging to a Palestinian family who had to flee their home in 1947 and have been unable to return. Many Palestinians who had to flee carry their home keys, hopeful of return. The reality though is that many of their homes have been destroyed the key has become a symbol of home and of their longing for their home. The piece of rubble was from a dream home of Ibrahim and his family, including seven children, in a village called Fordais (which means paradise). After five years of working, saving and construction, this family’s dream home was finally finished. Just as it was completed on this day in August 1997, Israeli soldiers arrived with five Police vehicles and seven vehicles filled with soldiers, and bulldozers. They flattened the house which had just been finished. One day Ibrahim stood on the threshold of his dream fulfilled, the next destroyed. His large family lived with his parents. The authorities make it difficult to get permission to build if you are Palestinian (on his own land), but he felt he had no choice for his family than to try and build them a home. He gave my friend this piece of rubble from his home to remember him by and tell his story.
