Absolutely overjoyed to share some great news from today! The International Awards Associate (IAA), in unison with the European Photography Awards, have selected three of my photographs as Gold winners and seven other images as recipients of Honourable Mentions.
From the press release of the European Photography Awards; “Drawing an impressive number of entrants, the competition received over 3,500 submissions across 50 nations, including the United States, Germany, Italy, Canada, France, Australia, Spain, United Kingdom, Japan, Switzerland, Greece, Portugal, Sweden, and beyond, featuring its global appeal and presence.”
Many thanks to all the judges and congratulations to the winners and runners up. Here are the ten images, with captions and information on the equipment used.
As always, all the photographs were shot in raw and processed in Adobe’s Lightroom Classic, on either an Apple Mac Pro or Mac Studio, using calibrated Eizo CG276 monitors. In the commercial photography using lighting, I also always use a colour meter, to compensate for any colour temperature shifts brought forth by light diffusers and reflectors.

Absolutely thrilled to have received these comments from the international jury of the New York Photography Awards for 2023, after four of my photographs were awarded “Silver Winner”. A further four photographs were also recognised with “Honorable Mentions”. To have eight images picking up awards, from a set of ten images entered for the awards, has been more than delightful and brings some sweet news to see out the end of the year with.
All of the photographs were shot in raw and processed in Adobe’s LightRoom Classic on a Mac Pro, with calibrated Eizo CG screens. The images were then finished off in Exposure Software’s X7 plugin.
Interestingly, five of the awarded images were made during photography workshops which I was tutoring. One during a one to one bespoke street photography workshop and the rest on two summer street photography workshops, in conjunction with my good friend and colleague Steve Simon. Look out for details of our 2024 workshop!

Three Honourable Mentions at the 16th Annual Black & White Spider Awards
Very happy to share that several of my monochrome images have had awards success at the BW Spider Awards. During the online Gala Ceremony, attended by by over 11,000, I was thrilled to receive three honourable mentions and also discover that five other images had also been nominated.

Photojournalism – A Vigil By Smartphone Lights. Fundraising and Candlelight Vigil. Following miltary action by Azerbaijan with the backing of Turkey from the 27th of September, against the Republic of Artsakh (Nagorno Karabakh) and Armenia, a war has ensued in the region. Armenian communities in the diaspora gather to raise funds with the defence effort and humanatarian crisis in Artsakh and Armenia. Members of the Armenian community in the UK gather for a candle lit vigil (using smartphone lights as a result of health and safety rules) and fund raising event for the Armenia Fund (Himnadram) with the support of the Armenian Apostolic Church in London. People – Brighton beach, as on of the hottest days of the year comes to an end. As the COVID 19 lockdown has been relaxed, thousands of beachgoers flocked to Brighton as temperatures hit 30C (lower than the maximum temperature in South East England, which topped 36C). Authorities in Brighton have taken action to reduce the crowds at their beaches, on one of the hottest days of the year, with fears that social distancing will not be possible. Brighton, UK. All the images were shot in raw and processed on an Apple Mac Pro (2013 model) in Adobe’s Lightroom. The monochrome work was then finished in Exposure Software’s X6. To maintain absolute and precise control during processing, calibrated Eizo CG monitors were used.
As the judges of the prestigious Travel Photographer of the Year competition, currently choose the winners for the main competition from the announced shortlist, the organisers have now opened the public vote segment for the People’s Choice award – the winner of which is chosen purely by visitors voting for their one favourite image. The winner will be announced in January together with all of the judged results of the awards.

The photograph was made when I was shooting a project for the L Mount Alliance, using a Sigma fp and a Leica 50mm APO-Summicron SL lens. The raw file was processed in Adobe Lightroom Classic and finished off in Exposure Software’s X6.

Wreath-laying ceremony at the memorial khachkar (a carved Armenian Stone Cross memorial sculpture) took place after a remembrance service and prayer of intercession, to commemorate the 105th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide of April 24th, 1915, when 1.5 Million Armenians were massacred by the Ottoman Empire. A member of the clergy swings a censer (a type of thurible) of incense. The usual wreath laying ceremony at The Cenotaph, attended by hundreds, was cancelled this year due to the COVID 19 lockdown and instead took place on church grounds. All the images were made using the L-Mount camera system. Three images were shot on the Lumix S Series with Lumix S Pro lenses and the other two images were shot on the Sigma fp with a Leica APO Summicron SL lens and a Lumix S Pro lens.
All photographs were from raw files, edited and processed in Adobe Lightroom and finished in Exposure Software’s Exposure X5, with the monochrome image being finished in DxO’s Nik Collection, Silver Efex Pro.
