TPOTY 2014 finalist

Extremely happy to share that my image of The Angel Of The North is a finalist in the Travel Photographer of the Year, in the One Shot: Monochromal category. The image was shot on a Canon 5D MkIII and Canon 16-35mm f2.8L II lens. The processing was done in Aperture and Nik Software’s Silver Efex Pro.

Many congratulations to all the winners, runners-up, commended and other finalists in the contest; so many stunning images by some very talented photographers. The 2014 TPOTY images can be seen HERE.

Astonishingly, this fabulous news means that this year my images have reached the finals of Travel Photographer of the Year, Professional Photographer of the Year and Landscape Photographer of the Year (where I got a Commendation). A bit stunned really!

We’d like to congratulate all the winners; some exceptional work. You can view the entries HERE.

The film, 1 Sixpence 1 Play, was shot on a pair of Olympus OM-D E-M1 cameras and Olympus lenses. We also used a GoPro Hero 3+ Black Edition for a few shots from on the play field. All audio was recorded onto a Roland R26 using various Rode microphones. The films (including the behind the scenes) were edited using FCP X on a Mac Pro, using Eizo monitors and Event Opal audio monitors for the sound edit. For a more detailed post on this, including the behind the scenes video, please see HERE.

Well, it’s not every day one gets invited to Hollywood for an awards ceremony; this was something I will definitely cherish. I was somewhat shocked to find that my short film on the Electric Coffee Company was shortlisted in the “Official Selection”: Best mini film or documentary. To then find out that the awards were to be in Hollywood became almost funny; my short film was in a Hollywood award’s ceremony!

Sadly the film didn’t win its section, but in all honesty, I had seen four films (out of ten nominated finalists) in my section which were great, so wasn’t thinking I had a chance of winning. What was special though was realising I was the only solo film maker; the others were all either TV companies or production companies. Not too shabby to be a finalist in this talented group I guess!

For those interested in the technical aspects, the film was entirely shot using a Leica M (Type 240) using a Leica 28mm Summicron ASPH, 35mm Summilux ASPH FLE and 50mm Noctilux ASPH, with some shots using a Leica OUFRO macro adapter. Ambient audio recorded on the internal microphone and interview recorded on a Roland R26 using a Rode lavalier microphone. Edited using FCP X. Partially colour graded in “Color” by Neil Patience ( patience.tv ). Final grading with FCP X and Film Convert. A Manfrotto 561BHDV video monopod was used for all shots apart from the interview, for which a Gitzo video tripod was used. I also used a Lee RF75 filter holder & hood, along with Lee ND filters.

The film was my first ever using the new Leica M (Type 240) and also the first time using the very useful Manfrotto 561BHDV Fluid Monopod with Head.

Delighted to share some good news. A reportage I shot at the amazing Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, to highlight the conditions the hospital has to work in and help raise awareness and hopefully funds, has been selected by the UK Picture Editors Guild as a finalist in this year’s competition.
