Fancy Being Exhibited In The Guggenheim?

“The project, called YouTube Play and conceived as a biennial event, is intended to discover innovative work from unexpected sources. It is open even to entrants who don’t consider themselves artists, and actively encourages the participation of people with little or no experience in video. “People who may not have access to the art world will have a chance to have their work recognized,” said Nancy Spector, deputy director and chief curator of the Guggenheim Foundation. “We’re looking for things we haven’t seen before.”

Microphones microphones microphones!

We’re all visual people so the switch to shooting video as far as the visual aspect, isn’t too traumatic. However, audio can be another thing entirely. One of the first things anyone will realise when taking their first steps into the world of audio is that there are a several different types of microphone and the choice of which to use in a given situation can be daunting. The DVEStore have put together a very neat short video covering 8 different microphones and is well worth a watch and more importantly, a listen.

I’m delighted to say that I’ve finished another short film called Homage which was premiered today at the PEN event in the Brickhouse in London’s Brick Lane.

To read a little about how it was conceived and some behind the scenes stuff, please have a look at an article in the British Journal of Photography online. It goes into some detail so I didn’t want to just repeat all they have written, so please do check it out.

Canon & Vimeo Film Contest

The Story Beyond the Still “The Cabbie” – Behind The Scenes from Vincent Laforet on Vimeo.

Introducing the first user-generated HD Video Contest where photographers become filmmakers, and we all see beyond the still. To kick off the contest, Canon asked me to interpret what story I saw beyond the still, and to tell that story with the new Canon EOS 7D. My short film will be the first chapter of seven, each ending with a still photograph for the next aspiring filmmaker to interpret. Posing the question to everyone, what do you see beyond the still?

This video was Directed, Shot and Edited by Blake Whitman. Additional cameras by Brian King and Sean O’Brien.

Friend and colleague Vincent Laforet has announced a fascinating and ground breaking film contest on his blog.

In a nutshell, it involves films being made which take on the story from the end frame, a still image, on the film shot by the previous person. Watch the film and visit his blog for full details.
