Any thoughts on best autofocus Canon-EOS-mount 50mm for stills use… specifically Canon 50mm 1.2 vs Sigma 50mm 1.4? That may sound a silly comparison ($1500 vs $500) , but I hear conflicting reports over build-quality and autofocus problems with both. I’ve had the Canon 50mm 1.4, good value but build quality is flimsy, I’ve already had a knock take it out of action…
I can’t comment on the Sigma 50mm as I’ve never used one. Generally speaking though, some of their optics are good but build quality isn’t, so in rough situations or if they are used heavily, they just tend to fall apart – this is from the experiences of several colleagues. For gentler use I guess this won’t be a problem.
As fas as the Canon lenses, over time, I’ve had two 50mm f1.4 and didn’t like them. Optically not great at f1.4 and build quality was lacking. I now have the 50mm f1.2L and it is a stunning lens. AF is snappy and the image quality is amazing. It’s probably not as fast as a 70-200 but it’s moving a lot more and heavier glass. It’s no slouch though and I’ve never been left wanting. Completely recommend the Canon 50mm f1.2L.
